EArPieCe Project
EArPieCe focuses on the analysis of the popular music repertoires in the 3 IPA Countries (Italy, Albania and Montenegro) in order to discover possible similarities, which will be the basis for a new future music production, putting the cultures of the territories involved into an integrated system. Also, cross-cultures researches about music interpretation are an innovative subject of study: there’s the need to understand how cognitive and emotional processes are linked to musical perception.

Tests

The main objective of the Neuroscientific Analysis of the Project Music Contents is to examine the neurobiological response by a target of listeners, heterogeneous but homologous in all and three countries, to listening to specific pieces of the Popular Music (specifically, musical marches) belonging to the territories involved. As target users, both men and women has involved, their age range was between about 18 and 60, they work in the field of music and mostly play an instrument or compose music. In order to carry out the test, the Brainwear® EMOTIV-X headset was used to collect EEG datas. The presence of 14 electrodes placed diffusely on the skull allowed a complete analysis of the brain areas particularly stimulated during the listening to music. Thanks to the integrated EMOTIV PRO software, it was also possible to analyse the emotional performance associated with listening to the music track, according to the following metrics: Engagement, Excitement, Stress, Relaxation, Interest and Focus. A survey for project (and test) perception was carried out to support the execution of neuroscience tests. The conscious answers given through the survey, crossed with the results of the neuroscientific tests, has given a more complete view of the user experience, especially regarding conscious emotional responses and unconscious emotive reactions.

Data analysis
It was possible to analyse the data on two distinct levels: according to a conscious analysis related to the perception of music and according to an unconscious analysis, based on the data collected through the headset. It is therefore interesting to compare how the rationality dictated by a conscious approach to listening differs or not from the unconscious emotions (mainly, liking) felt. In addition to these data, other data from the survey are added, through which it is possible to outline the profiles of the Testers (age, gender, schooling, possible ability to play an instrument, and so on).
